“And though she be but little, she is fierce.” This is a quote from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream. DJ Skopii one of the youngest DJs to be shortlisted for the best DJ category for the Upper West Region in an interview with ECHOSOUNDZ.COM disclosed that although he has fewer years of experience in the art of DJing as compared to his competitors, he is by no means outmatched or out-classed by them.
DJ Scopii who has been the official DJ for the Upper West Music awards for three years running was also the official DJ for the 2016 edition of the Kakube festival. Explaining how he got himself in the art of DJing, Scopii revealed that he started DJing from his bedroom but got his first professional gig at the Safari Pub in Wa. After sometime with the pub, DJ Scopii later joined Radio Progress as their brunch time host. He also is the official DJ for “The Guy’s Pub” located in Wa. DJ Scopii who has been DJing professional for a little over three years stated that he has always had the passion to be a DJ.
Known outside the entertainment circles as Fidelis Abatabo Basinnaa, DJ Scopii attended Nandom Senior High and has a Bachelor of Commerce (finance) degree from the University for Development Studies. Although he is currently in Jirapa doing his National Service, DJ Scopii still has time to pursue his love for the art of DJing. He said that though being a DJ in the region is not an easy feat to accomplish; what drives him is his passion for the job. He lamented that all patrons of the services of DJs give are what he termed as “something small for kooko or credit.” When asked why he is into the profession when it doesn’t pay much; he said “Disc Jockeying is an inward thing, so I cannot stop, moreover I still haven’t achieved much yet.” Although he has not received any formal training in his line of profession, he has learnt on the job.s DJ Scopii revealed that he has always learnt from his predecessors and still learn and derive inspiration from them. He mentioned DJ Black from Ghana and DJ Nicco and Jigga from Jamaica as the people he looks up to in his line of work.
DJ Scopii expressed contentment about being nominated to be a part of the Rush Ghana DJ Awards. For him, the nominations doesn’t come to him as much surprise as he thinks he deserves to be nominated as he is one of the region’s top DJs. When probed as to whether he thinks he stands a chance of winning the prestigious awards, he said he has what it takes to be the top DJ. “What I do is not just play music, I do what a DJ does, I define sound through what I play” he explained.
